Testo Factor X Review

Labels: , , , , ,

Check out my own personal results with Plexus:

What is Plexus?

I paused before I hit the “publish” button on this one, because my conclusion was a bit of a shocker. We decided to examine ingredients, side effects, clinical research and customer service. Additionally, we scrutinized hundreds of consumer comments and reviews. Then, we refined and summarized to give you the info you need.

What You Need Know

First off, Testo Factor X is a dietary supplement containing tribulus terrestris, coleus froskohlii, alpha lipoic acid, enzymes, horny goat weed, eurycoma and black pepper extract. After taking two per day, the supplement supposedly increases testosterone levels. One benefit is that you can take with you on-the-go.

There’s no information about the makers of Testo Factor X, but it appears as it’s been on the market since 2013. We found a few positive customer comments and we like that it contains some natural ingredients, but read on…

Ineffective Ingredients – “Seeing Results?”

The first concern was the effectiveness of Testo Factor X ingredients. “The supplement contains some natural ingredients,” said our Research Editor. “But if the formula doesn’t work, this could be concerning.”

“I was disappointed at first. I didn’t feel anything,” said a customer.

“Sadly, it didn’t do much. If it did anything, I didn’t notice,” reported another.

We found some customer talking about how the supplement produced the results they were looking for.

“It took a couple of weeks, but I felt it after it worked into my system,” said a consumer.

“I was surprised at how much better I felt after using Testo Factor X,” commented another.

Price – “Breaking the Bank?”

Customers took to the forums to complain about the high price of Testo Factor X. “I didn’t mind paying $5 for shipping and handling, but the $140? I had to cancel,” stated a user.

“Did nothing for me except surprise me with that overpriced charge,” said a consumer.

“$140 for something that doesn’t work? No thanks,” reported a consumer.

Some people didn’t mind the price, because they thought it was a good investment.

“There are other supplements out there for cheaper, but I think it is worth it,” said a customer.

“You have to pay for quality to get quality, so price doesn’t bother me,” reported another.

One user stated, “I loved the supplement and I think it’s fairly priced, but I could see how affordability would be an issue.”

We have experience behind us and have found that something considered a concern, like a high price tag, could reduce the chances of long-term success. If Testo Factor X isn’t affordable, any good it could do is meaningless.

The Science – “Solid?”

We found the ingredients in Testo Factor X are linked to scientific research. What was missing was a direct link to the studies and the effectiveness of this particular formula. At DietSpotlight, we like seeing science used to back a supplement. But if there’s no direct link, we become concerned.

The Bottom Line – Does Testo Factor X Work?

What’s the real deal with Testo Factor X? Well, we like that it includes some natural ingredients and that we found some favorable customer comments, but we’re skeptical about this one because the research supporting the ingredients, doesn’t relate to this formula. We also have concerns because customers are reporting the ingredients are ineffective and the price isn’t reasonable.

If you’re ready to change your life, we suggest using a supplement that contains some clinically-tested ingredients, known to support healthy testosterone levels.

One of the best products we’ve seen in 2016 is one called Pronabolin. The formula contains some clinically-tested ingredients that have been shown to boost testosterone levels and improve muscle strength and libido. Customers are talking about seeing great results and there’s no mention of adverse reactions.

Also, the makers of Pronabolin are so confident in their product they’re offering a multiple-bottle discount and a 120-day money-back guarantee. This is always a good sign.

Testamatol Review

Labels: , , , , ,

Check out my own personal results with Plexus:

What is Plexus?

Why are people talking about Testamatol? We took a closer look at the ingredients, side effects, customer service, and research. Furthermore, we examined hundreds of user reviews and comments. Then, we summarized and refined to give you the info you need.

What You Need to Know

First off, Testamatol is a dietary supplement containing l-arginine alpha ketogluterate, l-arginine, l-arginine monohydrochloride, and l-citruline. The recommended serving is two capsules per day, supposedly helping to boost testosterone levels. The ease of use is one benefit.

There’s limited information about JT Hantian LLC, the company behind Testamatol, but it appears the business was started in 2010. We like that we found some favorable comments and that it includes some natural ingredients, but read on…

Ineffective Ingredients – “Does it Work?”

The first concern was the effectiveness of Testamatol ingredients. “There’s some solid science backing amino acids,” said our Research Editor. “But if a formula containing those ingredients don’t produce results, the profile is meaningless.”

“I feel like this supplement did nothing for me,” stated a customer.

“Been using for a month and haven’t noticed a change,” commented a consumer.

Some users felt as if the supplement did work and help them see results.

“Most of the stuff out there is actually junk, but Testamatol seems to be good,” reported a consumer.

“I’ve been taking Testamatol for two months and have definitely noticed a change.” reported another.

High Price – “Not Worth It!”

The high price tag associated with Testamatol was a concern of several customers. “They get you on the intro bottle and quickly charge you $89.95 in 14 days,” said a user.

“After ordering the trial, which was supposedly only $4.95 and $5.95 for shipping and handling, I was charged $89.99,” commented a customer.

“After the trial and the monthly charges, I was hit with a charge of nearly $200,” said a consumer.

The cost of the supplement wasn’t a concern for some customers.

“My product arrived quickly and didn’t cost that much,” reported a user.

“My order arrived within a few days, and I had no issues canceling my membership after the trial bottle,” stated another.

We’ve researched countless supplements and have found that all it takes is something considered troublesome, like a high price tag, to limit the chances of long-term success. If Testamatol breaks the bank, it’s not worth your investment.

The Science – “Research?”

Testamatol contains some ingredients that have been researched. But what we found was the findings didn’t point toward this particular formula and didn’t center on boosting testosterone levels. At DietSpotlight, research is a critical part of the puzzle. If there are no studies, we start to have concerns.

The Bottom Line – Does Testamatol Work?

Here’s the moment of truth: our final thoughts on Testamatol. We like that it includes a few natural ingredients and that we found some favorable customer comments, but we’re skeptical about this one because there’s no scientific research proving the supplement boosts testosterone levels. We also have concerns due to the high price tag and ingredients not working.

If you want to gain strength and vitality, why not try a supplement designed to help naturally boost your testosterone levels?

Among the best products we’ve seen in 2016 is one called Pronabolin. Made with clinically tested ingredients and has been shown to boost test levels. There’s no talk of negative side effects and customers are seeing great results.

Plus, for first-time customers, the makers of Pronabolin are offering a multiple-bottle discount. We like to see this kind of thing because it shows confidence in the product.

Special K Protein Shakes Review

Labels: , , , ,

Check out my own personal results with Plexus:

What is Plexus?

In the weeks that led to this review, I figured out whether Special K Protein Shakes actually works. We took a close look at ingredients, side effects, clinical research and customer service quality. Plus, we analyzed hundreds of customer comments on the web. Then, we condensed and summarized to give you the info you need.

What You Need to Know

First off, Special K Protein Shakes include protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals. If used as a meal-replacement, you’ll drink one in the place of breakfast, lunch or dinner. The bottles are small, so you can pop on in your bag and take it with you.

Special K Protein Shakes are a product of Kellogg’s, a company that’s been around for more than 100 years. The product is available through trusted retailers and grocery stores. We like the longevity of the business and that we located some positive customer comments, but read on…

Sugar Content – “In a Weight-Loss Product?”

The first concern is the high sugar content of Special K Protein Shakes ingredients. “Weight-loss drinks should have a balance of proteins, carbs and fats,” said our Research Editor. “But if there’s a high sugar content, you may simply be adding unnecessary calories.”

“If you’re on low-carb then don’t be fooled by the high protein in this drink because there are 18g of sugars (out of a total of 28g of carbs),” stated a user.

“The sugar content is way high which exceeds the protein levels that would make you more satisfied after drinking,” reported a consumer.

Some customers didn’t mind the sugar content, because it satisfied their needs.

“I feel like these are a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth without wrecking your efforts,” commented a customer.

Poor Taste – “Not Flavorful!”

We found that customers were taking about the poor taste of Special K Protein Shakes ingredients. “Kellogg’s Special K Protein Breakfast Shake Vanilla Cappuccino isn’t good,” stated a customer.

“I did not think that this would have a real good taste  and I was right,” said a user.

“Been using for a few weeks and can’t get past the taste,” mentioned another.

While some didn’t care for the taste, other customers reported a different take on the product.

One user reported, “ It was not over-powering in flavor, but it stacked right on up there with my morning hot Vanilla flavored coffee.”

“I really enjoy all of the flavors,” said another.

Our research into supplements has shown that all it takes is something small, like poor taste, to put the brakes on long-term success. If Special K Protein Shakes aren’t the most flavorful, customers may walk away from it.

The Science – “Rock Solid?”

At DietSpotlight, we look for research showing a supplement will help you lose weight. We didn’t find solid science showing Special K Protein Shakes were effective. There are studies backing the effectiveness of protein and fiber as it relates to weight-management, but the results don’t point toward this formula.

The Bottom Line – Do Special K Protein Shakes Work?

Before heading out for your Special K Protein Shakes, here’s our final thoughts. We like the price and that we located some favorable customer comments, but we have concerns because the research about protein and fiber doesn’t relate to this product. We’re also a bit skeptical because customers are talking about the high sugar content and poor taste.

If you want to shed those extra pounds, why not try combining a healthy balanced diet and exercise routine with a weight-loss supplement that contains some clinically-tested ingredients?

One of the best products we’ve seen in 2016 is one called Leptigen. Since it’s made with clinically tested ingredients, and we couldn’t find any negative mentions of the product; we think it’s a good place to start.

Also, for new customers, the team behind Leptigen is offering a Special Trial Offer. This is great news, and something we always like to see.

Overlooked Survival Skills That Even The Experts Havent Mastered

Labels: , , ,

Overlooked Survival Skills That Even The Experts Haven’t Mastered

The list of skills that would be useful in a survival situation is a very long one, and it’s nearly impossible for a single human being to be adept at all of them.

But are there really skills that even the most hardcore survivalist hasn’t mastered? Yes.

And to prove it to you, I made a list of some of the hardest skills to master. Are you ready to tackle at least one of them?

1. Crossing a river

I’m starting with this because it’s the “easiest hardest skill” I could find. The last time I crossed a creek was a few days ago, and it was a piece of cake. All I had to do was take off my shoes, my socks, and slowly move through the cold water. But what if you’re in a survival situation and you need to cross a fast, deep river AND take all your gear to the other side? What if you have a spouse or a kid with you who can’t swim?

Get The Essential Secrets Of The Most Savvy Survivalists In The World!

Crossing a river is NOT easy. You need to think about the depth, you need to find the right place to do it, you need to worry about the speed of the current, the river bed and so on. It’ll also be useful if you had at least one flotation device on you. Something to consider beforehand when you assemble your survival kit or bug-out bag.

2. Preparing mentally

Even the toughest Navy Seals have trouble keeping it straight when faced with utter chaos. But how can we prepare for something that we’ve never experienced – that even trained military personnel, who train for years, aren’t ready for?

There’s a few things you can do to toughen yourself up and make sure you change the way you react to disastrous events:

  • Take self-defense classes (your life won’t be in danger, but at least you’ll experience falling and physical pain).
  • Imagine yourself surviving.
  • Start going to the gym and set ambitious goals (check with your doctor first, to make sure you can do this, but try to push yourself to the limit. You can even keep a diary if you want, like I used to do so back in college).
  • Watch YouTube videos of people caught in flash floods, earthquakes, house fires, etc., and try to put yourself in their shoes. Also, watch survival movies.

3. Making primitive tools

Why would anyone want to make primitive tools and weapons in the first place? Because in a survival situation, they may be the only tools available.

Overlooked Survival Skills That Even The Experts Haven’t Mastered

Stone tomahawk

Anyone can make a spear or a primitive hammer with their survival knife, but what about more complex items such as stone tomahawks, grain grinders, spear throwers, or returning boomerangs? These all require practice, and rest assured you won’t be able to do them without someone guiding you. You can find people online teaching such classes, and hopefully there’s someone near you who can help.

4. Medical survival

Most survivalists aren’t doctors, because becoming one involves dedicating your entire life to it. Taking a first-aide course is a good start, but delving even more into it requires not just patience but someone to point you in the right direction. If you have a spouse or a relative who’s a doctor, they might be able to help.

New 4-Ounce Solar Survival Lantern Never Needs Batteries!

To get your feet wet, one of the things you can do is to learn about herbal medicine and home remedies. Replacing pills with nature’s medicine is a great way to boost your immunity as well as to learn about making these potions, plant extracts and poultices. It will also teach you to eat healthier and to take care of your body more, thus reducing the odds of coming down with something awful as you age.

5. Working with clay

A major disaster could mean you won’t be able to buy things. This includes pots and pans. The trouble is, making pottery isn’t something you learn in an afternoon. You also need quite a few pottery tools. Still, this can be an enjoyable hobby that will provide real value in day-to-day life.

Is Catching Fish with Your Bare Hands the Ultimate Survival Angling?

Labels: , , ,

fish

fishPeople have enjoyed the taste of fish for millennia beyond reckoning. And in all that time, it’s still always been a struggle to pull the fish from their watery home. Of all the ways to fish, the simplest methodology by far is hand fishing. This is about as primitive as fishing can get. Actually grabbing the fish from its liquid lair with your bare hands is nothing short of primal. But does that make it the ultimate method of survival fishing?

Although the idea of hand fishing is simple enough, like many survival skills, this “simpler” process requires a lot of technique. Hand fishing also requires an understanding of the fish’s habitat. Flathead catfish, for example, will hang out in underwater rock ledges, in holes, and under submerged logs in rivers and lakes during the daytime or while guarding eggs. These confined spaces make this species easier to catch, as the fish will be trapped with its back against the “wall.”

To get started in hand fishing, find a waterway that is known to contain catfish and other large slow species (in an area where this activity is legal). Wear shoes, long pants, a long sleeve shirt, and gloves, and wade out into the water. Use your feet to feel for structures that could harbor a fish, and then reach your hand into them. This almost always requires diving. If this works as planned, the fish will move forward and bite your hand. Fight your natural urge to pull your hand away. Leave your hand in the fish’s mouth and pull it toward you. Wrap your free arm around the fish, being careful to avoid contact with the barbs on the fish’s fins.

Never try this solo. Aways go with others so that they can help you if you become injured or entangled. The typical weight for a catfish caught by hand fishing is 22 to 39 pounds—not bad for a method that uses no fishing tackle whatsoever. It’s definitely the most bad-ass primitive method. But you also need to take into consideration the dangers inherent in this form of angling. I think your safer bet is to carry a survival fishing kit with hooks and line. You can’t afford to take big risks and risk big injuries in an emergency setting. No, hook and line fishing is not as cool—but there’s less risk of drowning, and I like that a lot. And in certain situations, getting soaked and risking hypothermia is a bad idea.

Ever grabbed a fish with your bare hands? What was your biggest catch? Let us know by leaving a comment.

3 Dirt-Cheap Mulches That Will Help Your Garden Flourish

Labels: , , , ,

3 Dirt-Cheap Mulches That Will Help Your Garden Flourish

The topic of mulch has been thoroughly discussed by avid gardeners for years. By now, we are well aware of the benefits of using mulch. Yes, it saves time and energy when it comes to maintaining a successful vegetable garden. Besides the obvious benefits of maintained soil-moisture and weed control, however, we also can count on controlled soil temperature and less erosion.

While most people take a trip to the closest garden center to purchase pre-packaged mulch, there are organic and affordable mulches you can find closer to home, even in your own backyard. You can have a weed-free, moist garden that smells and looks great!

Let’s take a look at five unique mulches you should consider to enhance your garden this season.

1. Pine needle mulch. This fragrant type of mulch is delicate and fine in texture. It also smells quite pleasant and has a lovely color to complement your garden. It tends to stay in place well, and because of this, is good to use on hills and slopes where other mulch would roll or blow off. Pine needles break down slowly.

Seamazing: The Low-Cost Way To Re-mineralize Your Soil

It can take about 12 to 18 months to totally decompose. You can also use the needles as a garden-soil conditioner. Pine needle mulch can often can be found locally and is used year-round.

2. Straw. Straw always smells wonderful when it’s fresh and warm. It has a beautiful golden hue that adds color to the garden. Straw is slow to break down. Straw has less nutrients than grass hay, but is still one of the most-used garden mulches. A thin layer of straw will still let light through and open the door to weeds. You may want to use several inches of straw, or use shredded straw instead of loose straw.

3 Dirt-Cheap Mulches That Will Help Your Garden Flourish

3. Leaves. Here is a real money-saver. Use the leaves you rake up in your yard, or ask your neighbor if you can rake their leaves. Run the lawnmower over the leaves and use them as a mulch. Leaves need to be shredded before being used, and they do decompose quicker than straw and pine needles but are worth the effort. Shredding the leaves prevents them from becoming matted when damp. Dry leaves are full of minerals.

If you are wondering how many leaves you will need, keep in mind you will want to have three to four inches of leaf mulch around your plants.

Get The Best Deals On Non-GMO Seeds For Your Garden Right Here!

Meanwhile, if you are willing to spend a little more on mulch and want something unique this season, then try these two:

Cocoa hull mulch. You will want to spray this woody-type mulch down with water, as it is really light and can blow around. Cocoa mulch has a pleasant color and fine texture. In fact, it actually smells like chocolate. This mulch is known to be one of the most beautiful and most expensive types of mulch. It doesn’t fade and is slow to decompose. It works well with herbs and other vegetables with small leaves.

Warning: Some gardeners claim cocoa hull mulch is poisonous to pets.

Grain hulls. Both rice and buckwheat can add nutrients to the soil. These mulches are slow to decompose, so you won’t have to reapply the mulch often. Grain hulls work well in areas that have poor drainage or in soils heavy in clay. They are very light, so it may be difficult to keep in the garden on windy days. You will want to wet the top of the mulch down when you first apply it to the garden.

There is a mulch for every gardener and every garden. Find a mulch that not only works with your style of gardening, but with your vegetables as well.

What are your favorite mulches? Share your tips in the section below:

How To Build A Small-Scale Backyard Aquaponics System For Less Than $100

Labels: , , , ,

aquaponics

Every homestead can benefit from a small scale aquaponics system. Let’s examine some of the reasons you might want to try one this year:

Enjoyment. It’s fun to watch fish grow and swim (even under ice in the winter). It’s also fascinating that you can grow healthy plants without soil.

Fresh produce. So many plants can be grown in aquaponics systems. The main consideration is the temperature if you plan on keeping the plants in the system. Example: scallions and strawberries can be kept year-round. Tomatoes, peppers and such are only growable in the warmer months, unless you have the system in a heated area.

Fresh fish. Even in a small system, you can raise edible fish. Catfish, perch and tilapia are all good, edible fish. You can even raise minnows or Koi to sell!

Natural fertilizer. I love using my fish water for fertilizer. A cup of fish water diluted into 5 gallons of water will be a nice light fertilizer for your garden or house plants.

Building a small aquaponics system is flexible. You can be as low tech as using a heavy tarp for a small pond liner, or you can purchase an aquaponics tank setup. I will explain how I have my system, which cost under $100 and has been running over a year.

I used an old recycled 12-foot pool. This is one of the pools you can buy at just about any general store with an inflating ring on top. The pump will not be any good, but you can buy a small fish pond pump for about $25. The plant container I used was the top of a plastic drum, so it had the two bung holes in the bottom. Along with these supplies, I used some stone that I had in the driveway to serve as growing media.

To summarize, the important components included only the following:

1. Old recycled 12-foot pool.

2. 1 plastic drum.

3. Stone (small driveway stone).

To assemble:

1. Dig a hole in the ground, 4 feet by 4 feet by 4 feet (saves money and keeps the pond cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter).

2. Place some sand in the bottom of the hole.

3. Use some old tarp and rugs to line the hole (to prevent puncturing the pool liner).

4. Put in the pool liner.

5. Fill the pond, but don’t drain your well! (You could use collected rain water.)

6. Pull out creases in the pond liner as you fill it. (So cleaning the walls in the future won’t be a hassle.)

Now that you have a small in-ground pool, it’s time to work on the growing container.

1. Cut the top of the drum. (I used a jigsaw, but you can use a circular saw carefully).

2. If using the top of the drum, cut it about 12 to 18 inches deep and use the end with the bungs.

3. Put a couple of treated 4x4s across your pond to rest the “drum top” on. Obviously, the bung holes will be facing down and keep the bung holes from draining on the treated lumber.

Time to fill the container

1. Place large stones over the bung holes so that small stones won’t fall through.

2. Fill container with stone (river rock, driveway stone, etc.).

3. Place your pond pump in the pond and the hose in the center of the growing container.I put a 6-inch terracotta planter bottom on top of my planter, and I have my hose pouring into that so it helps distribute the water.

4. I put a 6-inch terracotta planter bottom on top of my planter, and I have my hose pouring into that so it helps distribute the water.

This system works well and allows you even to take onion bottoms you cut and grow them into onion tops. Get creative and enjoy your own small aquaponics system. One last tip: Get some barley straw and toss it into your pond (it will naturally kill the algae that will grow in a pond).

High Cost of Rabbit Meat

Labels: , , , , , , , , , , ,

I was in the local grocery store (not Walmart) and was surprised to see rabbit meat for sale.
Preppers and Homesteaders lean toward raising rabbits for meat.

pp2

Rabbits, Chickens, and small goats are the primary livestock for most.

I touched on this in my article, 5 Best Skill Sites for the Prepper, commenting on the manure being an excellent fertilizer and requiring little attention in rasing them.

Recently the House repealed a law that required red meat labels to identify the origins. This was done in 2015. This means, the store purchased meat is a crap shoot on where it came from. We were already concerned with the GMO’s and use of Antibiotics in livestock rising.

Most buyers expect the meat or other items to be safe for consumption. Few think beyond the grocery aisle where the food comes from, or how it gets there.

FSIS provides a list  of recalls, helping the consumer be informed. Yet how many keep an eye on this, much less know about it?

026-2016 Ukrop’s Homestyle Foods Recalls Ready-To-Eat Turkey, Pork, And Beef Products Due To Possible Foreign Matter Contamination

The quality of our food intake has already plummeted, with fast food and quick microwave meals. The diligent consumer becomes hampered more with the removal of proper labeling. The fight to label GMO’s continues, and now source labels have been removed. Is it a wonder more and more families are wakign up and converting back to
their grandparents methods of raising their own livestock?

As I was making my way to the item I went in for at the store, the Rabbit meat sign stopped me.

So while many continue to purchase their meats, having no idea where it came from, preppers and homesteaders are eating fine.

Off-the-Grid Survival: How to Disappear (Or, What Not to Do If You Want to Be Rescued)

Labels: , , ,

off the grid

“Not all those who wander are lost.”

That oft-quoted line from J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings pretty well describes a certain type of outdoorsman. Maybe it’s a military sniper who relies on evasion to stay hidden and lethal. Or maybe it’s a surveillance professional, a paid spook who deliberately keeps a low profile in order to spy on his target. Or maybe it’s your friend who wins every paintball war because of her ability to melt into the woods and ambush her enemies, including you.

I honed my own evasion techniques during a 22-year career spent in really uncomfortable places while training British special forces, including the RAF’s elite Mountain Rescue unit. What I’ve learned is that it’s not easy to stay hidden, at least over a long period of time. But you can make a pretty good go of it as long as you practice rigorous self-discipline and follow these guidelines.

1. Don’t tell anyone your intentions
This may seem obvious, but it’s worth remembering that the more you keep to yourself, and the fewer friends and strangers you interact with, the more inscrutable your motives and intentions will be to people trying to predict your behavior and location.

2. Avoid leaving sign
From the moment you leave the known world, you will be inadvertently leaving evidence of your presence and direction. “Ground sign” includes broken twigs and footprints in mud and dust. Avoid leaving “middle sign,” such as brushed foliage and pushed-back vegetation. And be mindful of “top sign,” or hair and fibers caught on foliage and tree bark. Disguise your footprints by pulling an old pair of socks or hosiery over your boots.

3. Leave false trails and looping tracks
If you travel in one direction and then either backtrack or radically change direction in areas where you can disguise your sign, then you can mislead any trackers, or at least slow them down. Also consider jumping from one trail to another so that tracks start and stop intermittently. This will slow down any tracking operation, but it also takes time, patience, and the right set of conditions to execute.

4. Leave your electronics behind
Do not carry your cellphone. If you absolutely must, for safety’s sake or to be in touch with a rescuer at the end of your walkabout, then remove the battery and the SIM card before you begin your trip. Electronic surveillance, and in particular cell-cluster analysis, can give very precise location data. And a deep analysis of digital behavior gives searchers a robust profile of your habits and your likely intentions.

Wear optical camouflage to make yourself less visible to cameras and human eyes. If you want to get really serious about staying unfound, then consider thermal-signature camouflage, which will disguise your body heat to electronic surveillance devices such as drones carrying infrared detectors.

5. Manage your waste
Discard nothing: no trash or human waste. Your leavings will only serve to highlight that you were there, confirming to would-be trackers that they are back on track. If you must discard an item, try to lay a false trail, but that’s dangerous because it also confirms your presence. This waste-management edict is absolute: No spitting. No touching surroundings with bare hands. No dripping sweat.

How to Identify and Use the Common Mullein for Natural Uses and Survival Situations

Labels: , , ,

common mullein

We’ve all probably seen this plant on hunts and hikes, and thought, “That’s one fuzzy leaf.” But if you do your homework and find out more about this unusual-looking plant, you’ll discover that it’s far more than just a furry-leafed weed. Its name is mullein (Verbascum thapsus), and this plant offers more than a dozen uses. Many of these applications could be helpful, should we find ourselves in any kind of survival scenario. Even in an urban survival setting, you’re likely to find this plant. It loves dry sunny spots like road embankments and rocky highway medians, and it’s found along roadsides across the country.

Even though it’s not a native plant species, some Native Americans used fresh green mullein leaves as moccasin inserts to keep their feet warm. Not only do the fuzzy leaves offer insulation, they also release oil that opens up the capillaries to increase blood flow. It’s also been called “cowboy toilet paper,” though that use may not have soothing results. The irritating hairs and the vasodilating oil can cause a rash on the tender skin of your nether regions.

Mullein leaves can also be placed in hot water. Breathe in the steam to relieve congestion (though many Native folks just smoked the leaves for the same result). The pretty yellow flowers can also be soaked in oil to create earache relieving drops. The leaves can also be brewed into a tea for drinking, or mixed with tobacco and smoked.

And speaking of smoke… Mullein is one of my favorite hand-drill stalks for friction fire making. The dead leaves also make workable tinder. Select straight, dead stalks and trim off any rough spots. A light sanding on the stalk will save your hands from extra blisters (above and beyond the normal amount of blisters, that is). Twirl it on a softwood board like cedar, basswood, aspen, willow, or cottonwood and with much practice, you’ll start getting smoke and eventually learn to make embers with this ancient method. Very thick sections (about thumb diameter) can also be used for bow drill spindles. Normal drills have a pointy top, but you can’t carve a point on a mullein because it’s nearly hollow. But when coupled with an oversized and well-lubricated handhold socket, there’s no need for a point on the top of the drill.

Once you have your fire going, wouldn’t it be nice to have something you could cook over it? Mullein can help with that too. Although it’s illegal today, crushed mullein seeds have been used for centuries as an effective fish poison. The crushed seeds release saponins, glycosides, coumarin and rotenone into the water—all compounds that can stun fish and bring them to the surface. Used in a small body of water, it can bring up fish that are resistant to other forms of angling. Again, this is illegal and quite frankly unsportsmanlike, but in a dire emergency, do what you must. Just catch and gut the fish quickly to minimize the meat’s exposure to these toxins. Cook until well done.

What else do you use mullein for? Do you use wild plants for food or medicine? Please tell us your favorites by leaving a comment.

A Prepper’s Guide to Preparing a Get Home Bag

Labels: , , , ,

Contributed by Charles T

Have you ever imagined being stranded far from home with no transportation available to carry you back quickly? What would you do if you were at work and something prevented you from getting back home the normal way? Or your car got stuck during a blizzard and you had to stay in a stranger’s house while you waited for the plows to clear the roads? Would you have what you needed to walk home or stay in place for a few days?

These are the questions that get you thinking about the concept of a Get Home Bag (GHB).

A Get Home Bag is similar to a bug out bag, except…

Review of Augason Farms Pancake Mix

Labels: , , , ,

By Mr. Bam Bam

This morning I was in the mood for pancakes and suggested to my wife (aka Bam Bam) that we head for Waffle House. Instead, she pulled out a can of Augason Farms Pancake Mix that she’d won in the writing contest and proceeded to whip up giant stacks of fluffy pancakes. We sat down and poured hot maple syrup and butter over our servings. They were absolutely the best pancakes we’ve ever had. She prepared the entire 15-ounce can of pancake mix and we cleared our plates. (Yes, we are stuffed little piggies right now.) All she had to do was add water, stir the mix-up and throw…
